Air Canada celebrates its 70th anniversary in style

Seventy years ago, a Lockheed 10A took off, flying the colours of a new company named Trans-Canada Air Lines.  A few years later, that small enterprise was soon to become the giant known as Air Canada, one of the nation’s most highly regarded air carriers.

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, Air Canada invited its employees to a grand party at Montreal-Trudeau airport, and took advantage of the occasion to introduce its self-awarded ‘birthday present’, a brand-new Boeing 777.

Hundreds of company employees visited booths set up in the maintenance hangar, describing various aspects of the airline’s operations as well as a display of photos recounting the past.  A host of fun games and activities amused young partygoers, with food and refreshments available for all.

In the late afternoon, an announcement was made: a piece of the company’s past and future was to arrive on the tarmac. All guests rushed outside carrying binoculars and cameras to welcome the company’s very first aircraft, the 1937-era Lockheed 10A, followed by the long-awaited gift, a brand new Boeing 777.

Air Canada president Montie Brewer christened the aircraft in front of the assembled dignitaries and the media, and then shared the giant birthday cake prepared for the occasion with everyone.

Shortly afterwards, visitors were invited to approach the new aircraft, allowing guests to experience the magic of aviation all over again.
